Email - Electronic mail; a composed message that can be sent, stored, received and exchanged between networked computers globally.
Emoticon - A text-based expression of emotion made of ASCII characters that impersonate a facial expression
Encryption - A.K.A. scrambling is a method of obscuring confidential data so it is readable only by authorized recipients. For example, encryption is used to scramble people’s bank accounts’ numbers over the Internet.
FAT - File Allocation Table. An area that contains the records of all files and directory in a FAT-formatted hard disk drive. The operating system requires this information to access the files and define the data cluster's chain. There are FAT32, FAT16 and FAT versions. The FAT file system was created by Microsoft and is supported by almost all operating systems for personal computers.
File - A collection of related information that is stored in the computer as a unit.
File Allocation Table (FAT) - A partially patented file system developed by Microsoft for MS-DOS.
File Overwrite - Writing over existing files which in turn erases the previous data.
File Recovery - The process of recovering deleted or damaged files from a disk.
File System - A method for storing and organizing computer files and the data they contain so finding and accessing them is easy.
Firewall - An information technology security program which protects a computer from unauthorized users to access it via the Internet.
FireWire - Apple computer's brand name for high speed data transfer (up to 400 million bits per second). FireWire is often used to import video to a computer.
Firmware - A software (set of instructions) programmed on a hardware device. It is essentially the “brain” of the hard drive.
Flash Drive - NAND-type flash memory integrated with a USB 1.1 or 2.0 interface used as a small, lightweight, removable data storage device.
Flash Memory - A type of electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM).
Floppy Disk - A flexible plastic disk coated with magnetic material capable of storing about 1.4 megabytes of data. The floppy disk is 3.5’’ square, used as a convenient way of exchanging data between computers.
Folder - A Graphical User Interface structure for containing electronic files.
Fonts - A set of characters and/or symbols that come in different styles and sizes.
Format - The array of data for storage or display.
Freeware - Copyrighted Software made by programmers which is available for public use free of charge. The idea behind a freeware is a genuine willingness to assist people.
FTP - File Transfer Protocol. A format used for transferring files between computers. |
